Puppy Socialization 101

The critical socialization window is from 3–16 weeks of age, when a puppy’s brain is especially receptive and easily wired to accept new and novel stimuli. During this time, experiences have a lasting impact on how he or she perceives the world. Socialization isn’t just about letting your new puppy meet other dogs and people, but is included.
Puppy Socialization is about safely and thoughtfully introducing them to the world around them, helping them build confidence and positive associations. It’s incredibly important to socialize your puppy carefully and responsibly.
I advise you to not wait until they’ve completed all of their vaccinations at four months old. The long-term benefits of preventing fear, anxiety, and behavior issues far outweighs a lower risk of disease when proper precautions are taken, such as using a puppy stroller, booties, a blanket in public spaces, holding your puppy in new environments, and wiping their paws after outings. We offer safe socialization with our Pawsitive Start Puppy Training program.
Ways to socialize your new puppy (1-3 new experiences a day)
New people (different ages, appearances, outfits)
Sounds (traffic, vacuums, kids playing)
Surfaces (grass, sand, pavement)
Environments (parks, beaches, pet-friendly stores)
Handling (grooming, vet visits, being touched)
Puppy Classes (some start as early as 8 weeks old)
Car Rides (around the block, a drive-through, school pick up line)
