Clicker Training 101

  • Mar 28
  • 1 min read

A clicker is a small mechanical noisemaker. It is used in positive reinforcement dog training to mark the exact moment your dog performs the right behavior.

How Do I Use A Clicker?

  1. Click and Treat

  2. Repeat Step One of Click and Treat 5 times

  3. Finish training session

Your dog will quickly begin to learn that a click = a reward is coming! You will quickly start to notice their tail will wag or their ears will perk up.

What Do I do Next?

Ask your dog for a simple known behavior such as "sit" without any distractions present.

  1. Ask your dog to sit

  2. Click the exact moment your dogs behind is on the floor

  3. Reward your dog

  4. Repeat steps one through three 5 times

  5. Finish training session

Always wrap up your training sessions while your dog is still getting it right. End your sessions on success, not struggles. In the following days add in distractions such as practicing in your backyard (if applicable)
